What is Activation Lock (Find My iPhone)?

Activation Lock is a security feature built into all iOS devices that is automatically enabled when Find My iPhone is turned on. It is designed to prevent anyone other than the original owner from using, erasing, or reactivating a device that has been lost or stolen.

When Activation Lock is active, the device cannot be fully set up or used without entering the Apple ID and password of the account that was originally linked to it — even after a full factory restore.

What Causes Activation Lock?

Activation Lock is triggered in the following situations:

  • Factory Reset with Find My iPhone ON: When a device is restored using iTunes or 3uTools while Find My is still enabled, all activation records are wiped. Apple's activation server then refuses to generate new ones until the correct Apple ID is entered.
  • Remote Erase or Lost Mode: If the device owner triggers a remote erase or enables Lost Mode via iCloud.com or the Find My app, the activation records are deleted remotely and Activation Lock is immediately applied.
  • Random / Spontaneous Lock: In rare cases, a device can land on the Activation Lock screen for no apparent reason — even without being erased. This can sometimes happen after a crash or unexpected reboot on a jailbroken or older device.

How Does Apple Decide Whether to Activate a Device?

Every time an iOS device is set up, it contacts Apple's activation server (known internally as Albert). Albert identifies the device using its unique identifiers — IMEI, Serial Number, UDID, and ECID — and checks whether Find My iPhone is enabled for that device. If it is, Albert refuses to issue activation records and instead returns the Activation Lock screen. Only entering the correct Apple ID and password can convince Albert to allow activation.

Why is Activation Lock a Problem for Many Users?

While Activation Lock is an excellent theft-deterrent, it frequently creates problems for legitimate device owners:

  • Forgotten Apple ID: Many users, especially elderly or casual users, set up their device years ago and cannot remember the Apple ID or password they created at the time.
  • Second-hand purchases: Devices bought on marketplaces (eBay, Facebook, etc.) are sometimes sold with Activation Lock still active — either because the seller forgot to remove it, or intentionally in the case of stolen devices.
  • Deceased owner: Inheriting a family member's iPhone very often results in Activation Lock because Apple does not transfer account ownership.
  • Business / company devices: Devices previously enrolled in a company's Apple Business Manager that were not properly de-enrolled before being resold or reused.

How to Remove Activation Lock?

The only official and permanent solution is to have the device removed from the original owner's Apple ID. This can be done:

  1. By the original owner logging into iCloud.com → Find My → Remove Device
  2. Through an official iCloud Activation Lock Removal service like the one offered on Code-GSM, which communicates with Apple's servers to cleanly remove the lock
⚠️ Warning: Tools or services that claim to "bypass" Activation Lock permanently for free are almost always scams or involve methods that leave the device in a partially functional state. Always use official removal services for a guaranteed result.
