Apple ID Hint Service — Full Guide

The Apple ID Hint Service returns a partial (masked) version of the Apple ID email address linked to a locked iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Apple Watch. This hint reveals enough of the email for you to identify and recover the full address, which you can then use to regain access to the device.

What Does the Apple ID Hint Look Like?

The hint shows a masked version of your email — only a few characters are revealed. Examples:

l****.hotmail.com — email starts with "l" at hotmail.com
jo**@gm***.com — Gmail address starting with "jo"
a***7@y***.com — Yahoo address starting with "a" ending with "7" before the @
m***@icloud.com — iCloud email starting with "m"

When This Service is Useful

You forgot which email address you registered with Apple
You purchased a second-hand device and the previous owner forgot to sign out
The iPhone/iPad shows the Activation Lock screen and you cannot remember the Apple ID
You need the email before attempting account recovery through Apple

Step-by-Step: What to Do After Receiving the Hint

Step 1 — Identify the Email Provider

The domain in the hint tells you where the email is hosted:

@gmail.com / @gm***.com → Google — recover at accounts.google.com
@hotmail.com / @outlook.com / @live.com → Microsoft — recover at account.live.com
@yahoo.com / @y***.com → Yahoo — recover at yahoo.com/forgot
@icloud.com / @me.com / @mac.com → Apple email — this IS your Apple ID, recover at iforgot.apple.com

Step 2 — Try Guessing the Full Email

Using the revealed characters as clues, think about all email addresses you have ever used that match the pattern. Consider:

Your first or last name with numbers
Old email addresses from years ago
Combinations of your name + birth year, nickname, or initials

Step 3 — Recover via Apple's iforgot.apple.com

Go to iforgot.apple.com
Click "Forgot Apple ID or password?"
Enter your guessed email address
If correct, Apple will send a password reset link to that email
Access the email → reset the Apple ID password
Return to your iPhone — enter the Apple ID email and new password on the Activation Lock screen
Tap Continue — the device will verify with Apple and unlock

Step 4 — If You Cannot Access the Original Email

Visit Apple Support at support.apple.com
Select "Apple ID" → "Forgot your Apple ID or password"
Apple Account Recovery allows access recovery using trusted devices, phone numbers, or recovery key
If you have a receipt or proof of purchase for the original device, Apple Support may assist via their account recovery process (this can take several days)

How to Enter Your Apple ID at the Activation Lock Screen

Power on the iPhone/iPad
The Activation Lock screen appears — shows an iPhone icon with an Apple ID / password field
Enter your recovered Apple ID email and the reset password
Tap Continue / Sign In
The device contacts Apple's servers, verifies the credentials, and unlocks
Proceed through the setup wizard normally
